Confidentiality is a crucial component to establishing a safe and trusting therapeutic alliance. As with any doctor/patient agreement, your privacy is of the utmost importance. A confidentiality agreement is signed before you begin your sessions. As part of the informed consent process, it is your choice if you would like to have your psychological services provider share relevant treatment information with your other healthcare providers, but this can only be done with your written consent. Topics that you share in your sessions are confidential. However, there are a few limitations to confidentiality by law and/or ethical guidelines such as: suspected abuse or neglect of a child or elder, as well as suspicion that the patient is in serious danger of harming him/herself or has threatened to harm another person, or group of people. If this occurs, the proper authorities and law enforcement will be notified.
